Settlement Maple Grove continues its engagement with Church of the Open Door regarding the development of a Sacred Settlement. Our initial meeting took place in March 2025, where we shared our vision for collaboration and conveyed the sentiments of the neighboring community we represent. The meeting was productive and left us feeling encouraged.
In June 2025, the Church shared their response. While they expressed that they could not offer us an equal seat at the table, we agreed to continue the dialogue and explore a potential partnership on a specific pilot project. We continue to express the importance of an equal seat at the table. We have reaffirmed our support for the settlement while continuing to advocate for the interests and concerns of nearby residents.
The Church informed us that they were not comfortable signing a memorandum of understanding, citing its legal nature. We have agreed not to pursue that avenue further in light of their concerns.
In response to our request for regular impact assessments, the Church committed to increased communication and sharing of information related to the settlement’s broader positive effects. However, they indicated they could not share details tied to individual residents—such as late rent payments or disputes. In our written follow-up, we clarified that anonymized data of this nature would still be useful for understanding the community’s impact.
We look forward to our future collaboration and meetings with the Church and remain hopeful that we can work together towards making this a successful Sacred Settlement.
